What is Chiropractic Care?
“Listen to your body. It knows.”
People of all ages come to HealthMax Center for a variety of reasons.
Chiropractic philosophy begins with the principle that the human organism has an innate power to maintain its own health. It is defined as the ability to adapt to changes in its internal and external environments and maintain itself in a state of health.
The art of chiropractic focuses on adjustments to correct spinal malfunctions, called subluxations, in order to remove interference to the spinal cord and the nerves that exit between the bones of the spine. When bones of the spine become misaligned or move out of their normal position, they can distort the flow of information from the brain to the body.
Without the proper information from the nerve system, the body cannot function to its full potential. The nervous system controls all other organs and tissues of the body, so a nervous system functioning at its best facilitates the body’s ability to cope with disability and disease.
The chiropractic approach to health care is holistic, with the vision to see the human body as much more than the sum of its parts. Chiropractic focuses on maintaining optimal health naturally so that the body is better able to resist disease, rather than simply treating the symptoms of disease.
Others have heard chiropractic may help with major conditions such as asthma, colitis, anxiety, and seizures – issues one would not normally associate with chiropractic care. Quite often, conventional treatments have failed these patients. With conflicting opinions of health practitioners, a mistrust of prescription drugs, being overwhelmed by Google searches, the level of frustration is high.
Not ready to give up, open-minded patients are willing to learn how chiropractic removes layers of stress to the central nerve system, thereby improving overall health.
And lastly, many families receive chiropractic adjustments because they believe in preventive wellness care. Maintaining health, is not only more cost-effective, it lends to a greater quality of life. Wellness-based parents were likely under chiropractic care as children. Or, they have learned a whole body approach to health as adults. As a result, they embrace the option of having their own kids checked for proper spinal growth and development. Just like working out or making conscious food choices, chiropractic is a natural part of a holistic wellness regimen.
With nine years of higher education, clinical internships, and the completion of state and national board examinations, doctors of chiropractic are recognized as primary health care providers.
They are experts in detecting and correcting the Vertebral Subluxation Complex – namely the damaging effects of improper spinal biomechanics leading to pinched and irritated nerves, muscle spasm or weakness, inflammation, scar tissue and bone degeneration. The purpose of the nerve system is to coordinate the function of all muscles, glands and organ systems. Think of it as a high-speed internet system. Considering the many layers of physical, emotional and chemical stress the nerve system accumulates over a lifetime, restoring and maintaining the body’s ability to handle stress is essential.
"Look well to the spine for the cause of disease" -Hippocrates
“Chiropractic” comes from the Greek word, meaning “done by hand.” Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body’s inability to adapt to its environment. It looks to address these diseases not by the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjusting a musculoskeletal area of the body which is functioning improperly.
Chiropractic and the Nervous System
Chiropractic is unique in health care because it affects the one system that controls all functions in the body – the nervous system. The nervous system is comprised of the brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves that exit the spine. The body is designed to maintain and heal itself, a function called homeostasis.
Every part of the body is coordinated through the nervous system. The nervous system, the most important system in the body, is constantly receiving messages from every cell, organ, and system. It coordinates every function in our body, including breathing, heart rate, digestion, body temperature, immune system, and many others.
The procedures used to reduce misalignments are known as adjustments. Although there are numerous types and styles of adjusting, the intent is to use a specific force directed through the vertebra to restore proper alignment and function and to ultimately to restore the function of the nervous system. The desired effect is to reestablish full communication between the brain, spinal cord and the rest of the body, thus allowing the body to work properly and maintain homeostasis.
What we do?
Our doctors do not claim to cure diseases or conditions. Instead, their job is to:
1) Find and correct the cause of the problem
2) Enhance the body’s ability to maintain health, and encourage patients to pursue a wellness-based lifestyle
